In het negentiende eeuwse Canada arriveert de jonge Amerikaanse arts Simon Jordan in de Kingston-gevangenis en bestudeert het onthutsende brein van de veroordeelde moordenares Grace Marks. Hij moet zien te bepalen of deze moordenares ontoerekeningsvatbaar is of niet. Grace deelt de lugubere toekomstvoorspellingen van een handlezeres en vertelt over het lot van haar vriendin Mary Whitney, die altijd levenslustig was.
