The Handmaid's Tale
De nabije toekomst in de Republiek Gilead (voormalig Verenigde Staten) heerst een theocratisch schrikbewind dat is gebaseerd op een fundamentalistische uitleg van het oude Testament. Ook schaffen ze alle rechten van de vrouwen af. Tegelijk worden er bijna geen kinderen meer geboren: bijna alle vrouwen zijn onvruchtbaar geworden. In dit Gilead horen de vrouwen toe aan de staat en gebruiken ze hen alleen nog maar als broedmachines. Offred is een van de weinige vruchtbare vrouwen. Ze is een bediende bij de Commander en leeft in een wereld waar één verkeerd woord haar dood kan betekenen en moet zich staande zien te houden tegenover de commanders, hun vrouwen en andere bedienden, met het doel om te overleven en om haar dochter terug te vinden.
