The Hot Zone is het angstaanjagende waargebeurde verhaal over de oorsprong van het Ebola-virus, een zeer besmettelijk, dodelijk virus uit het centrale Afrikaanse regenwoud en de eerste aankomst op Amerikaanse bodem. In 1989, toen dit moordend virus plotseling verschijnt in chimpansees in een wetenschappelijk lab in de buitenwijken van Washington D.C. - op een steenworp afstand van het Witte Huis - is er geen remedie bekend. Een heldhaftige veteraan uit het Amerikaanse leger, die werkt met een geheim militair SWAT-team, brengt zichzelf in levensgevaar wanneer ze probeert te voorkomen dat het virus zich verspreidt onder de menselijke bevolking.
